Republic. I like the sound of the word. It means people can live free, talk free, go or come, buy or sell, be drunk or sober, however they choose. Some words can give you a feeling that makes your heart warm. Republic is one of those words. - John Wayne

Howard Dean - The Gift That Keeps On Giving
by Cordeiro
Sometimes I feel guilty for making fun of Howard Dean. After all, it must be hard for someone to go from presidential front runner to heading a rudderless, quasi-national political party. And to think, it all started with a scream that is still reverberating somewhere over the Iowa prairie.

But I digress.

Howie made his way to a place where he can be surrounded by people who have nothing better to do than show up for breakfast and listen to him monologue. West Hollywood. The event is not strange in and of itself. Some of the remarks bear broader scrutiny.

Howie is a politician first and foremost. His job is to get headlines and raise money. To do this, he stood atop the memory of Terri Schiavo and made the following statement:

We're going to use Terri Schiavo later on...This is going to be an issue in 2006, and it's going to be an issue in 2008.

The issue is: Are we going to live in a theocracy where the highest powers tell us what to do? Or are we going to be allowed to consult our own high powers when we make very difficult decisions?
Apparently, Howie anyone who believes and trusts in a Supreme Being lives in a theocracy. Apparently, Howie believes the highest authority on this earth resides within nine human beings in black robes.

Now before Prisoner6 goes apoplectic, I do not favor a Theocracy. I do not favor State Sponsored/Sanctioned religion in any way, shape, manner, or form. I do take comfort, however, in knowing the leadership I helped elect for this country does understand there is a higher power than themselves.

That's a good thing because if Howie and company represent the highest authority, we're all in very deep kimchi.

Here endeth the lesson.
