Barry Posen - The NYT Sicilian
Somedays I wonder why I bother with the New York Times. Barry Posen's column titled We Can Live With a Nuclear Iran only solidifies my opinion the NYT Op-Ed page is only fit to wrap fish.
I refer to him as the NYT Sicilian referencing a very funny character in The Princess Bride
His name is Vizzini. He's a Sicilian who is far and away the smartest man on the planet. Just ask him. To refresh your memory, I quote for you Vizzini's final exchange with Westley from the movie:
Vizzini: I can't compete with you physically, and you're no match for my brains.Vizzini then falls over dead, having been poisoned despite his oversized brain.
Westley: You're that smart?
Vizzini: Let me put it this way. Have you ever heard of Plato, Aristotle, Socrates?
Vizzini: Now, a clever man would put the poison into his own goblet, because he would know that only a great fool would reach for what he was given. I am not a great fool, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you. But you must have known I was not a great fool, you would have counted on it, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of me!
Vizzini: You only think I guessed wrong - that's what's so funny! I switched glasses when your back was turned! Ha-ha, you fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders, the most famous of which is "Never get involved in a land war in Asia", but only slightly less famous is this: "Never go in against a Sicilian, when *death* is on the line!". Hahahahahah!
Reading Mr. Posen's column today made me think of Vizzini. Mr. Posen states several times that a nuclear armed Iran creates a situation which can be dealt with. Says he:
A Middle Eastern arms race is a frightening thought, but it is improbable. If Iran acquires nuclear weapons, among its neighbors, only Israel, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Turkey could conceivably muster the resources to follow suit.I don't know about you, but that concept just makes me feel better about the whole situation. NOT!
Iranian nuclear weapons could be put to three dangerous purposes: Iran could give them to terrorists; it could use them to blackmail other states; or it could engage in other kinds of aggressive behavior on the assumption that no one, not even the United States, would accept the risk of trying to invade a nuclear state or to destroy it from the air. The first two threats are improbable and the third is manageable. (Emphasis mine)Mr. Posen's argument is here fatally flawed. The Islamofacist Murdering Thugs in Mullah's robes masquerading as reasonable leaders are not concerned with the well being of their nation. They hate Israel, with the United States coming in a close second on their list of targets for the weapons they desire. They are not prone to rational thought. They see negotiation as little more than a stalling tactic until they have a nuclear shield to hide behind. In the Cold War, the Soviet Union could, for the most part, be counted on to act like a nation concerned with the future. I do not believe this could be expected of a nuclear armed Ayatollah.
Anyone who attacks the United States with nuclear weapons will be attacked with many, many more nuclear weapons. Israel almost certainly has the same policy. If a terrorist group used one of Iran's nuclear weapons, Iran would have to worry that the victim would discover the weapon's origin and visit a terrible revenge on Iran. No country is likely to turn the means to its own annihilation over to an uncontrolled entity.
Mr. Posen uses many multi-syllabic phrases in his attempt to show the power of his large brain and convince the reader Iran would act like any other reasonable nation. He finishes with this sentence:
But as we contemplate the actions, including war, that the United States and its allies might take to forestall a nuclear Iran, we need to coolly assess whether and how such a specter might be deterred and contained.Mr. Posen fails miserably in his attempt to assuage the concerns raised by a nuclear armed Islamofacist Murdering Thug regime in Iran. The only way do deal with such an unstable regime desiring to acquire the most destructive weapons known to man is to insure, by force if necessary, that such weapons never fall into their blood soaked hands.
Here endeth the lesson.
Today's "Doh!" Award
And the winner is *drumroll* Ohio State Senator Charlie Wilson (D). He was (past tense emphasized) the best shot for the Ohio Jackasses to retain the 6th district Congressional seat. Wilson needed but 50 signatures to get on the ballot. He submitted 96, but it turns out most of them were invalid because they came from voters outside the 6th district.
The Devil is always in those pesky legal details, Charlie.
Mitt Romney Makes The Rounds
We'll start with the interview in South Carolina's The State last Friday. Continuing from there to Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace. I actually saw the interview and thought Mitt acquitted himself fairly well. Much better than did Slow Joe Biden, but outshining Biden is not exactly hard to do.
In short, Mitt could be a contender. We'll see.
New Major At Yale - Taliban Studies With An Emphasis in Jihad
Sayed Rahmatullah Hashemi is the former "Ambassador-At-Large" for the Taliban. According to his own words, he could "have ended up in Guantanamo Bay." Where is the now unemployed former ambassador?
Well, his address ends with "New Haven, CT". Yes, dear reader, he's a student at Yale. I have a simple answer to the question posed by the WSJ's John Fund - "Does anyone see a problem with this?"
Are there direct flights from New Haven to Gitmo?
Moonbats To Storm White House Gates
Now this should make for some good photo and video clips. United for Peace and Justice (via Appeasement and Surrender) are planning to "Storm the White House" starting on March 15th. They've asked for support from United Nations, PFAW, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Code Pink, police, soldiers, ACLU, CIA, NSA and International Courts of Justice/World Court.
Their purpose? Replace (via violent overthrow) the duly elected and constitutionally mandated government of the United States with an ad-hoc
...temporary government in place that is comprised of people from Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and all the organizations that have finally made us aware of the truth of the savage practices and illegal policies of our government in assassinating our own officials as well as people throughout the world who oppose their criminal activity.Memo to the long-haired, dope smoking, maggot infested United for Peace and Justice (via Appeasement and Surrender) crowd: Sober up before clicking the "post" button. On second thought, belay that. I needed a good laugh this morning.
Sergeant First Class Chad Gonsalves, United States Army
Take a minute from your day to read about Sergeant Gonsalves. He was killed in action last week in Afghanistan. He leaves behind a wife and three young boys. Those boys need to know their father died a hero.
Godspeed Sergeant Gonsalves.
Memo to CBS: Give David Martin A Big Fat Raise
David Martin is the CBS Pentagon Correspondent. He recently admitted to spiking a story detailing how the US Military deals with IEDs.
He did so, according to the cited article, after a "senior military officer complained that it contained information useful to the enemy."
Probably not the best career move he ever made, but at least he realized the enemy watches the evening news. That's more than can be said for the New York Times.
Tim "The Eyebrow" Kaine's Tax Waffle
Tim "The Eyebrow" Kaine is the Governor of the Commonwealth (only Yankees call it a state) of Virginia. He succeeded fellow democrat Mark Warner in a fairly close off year election - mostly by talking out of both sides of his political oral cavity. He had one message for Northern Virginia - that being "I'll fix the transportation disaster you have to endure every morning." He had an entirely different message for Southern/Western Virginia - basically touting Red-State politics. His opponent stumbled badly, so The Eyebrow now sits in Richmond's Big Chair.
Campaigning and governing are two totally different realities, and we here in Virginia are beginning to see The Eyebrow's plan for overhauling the roads in Northern Virginia. He has a very simple plan - raise taxes.
The Eyebrow's campaign started off with a pledge to "veto any new taxes for transportation until a constitutional amendment locked up the transportation trust fund." Since then he has "softened" his stance to simply avoiding the suggestion of tax increases unless "he felt sure that the money raised would go to transportation." (Emphasis mine)
Who would bear the brunt of the Eyebrow's confiscatory tax scheme? Car buyers (an increase to 5% from 3% of the sales tax on cars) and home buyers (an unstated increase on the purchase of a home). Miscellaneous other "fees" would be increased as well to give The Eyebrow another Billion to play with in Richmond.
Count me as one Virginia Taxpayer unwilling to part with any more of my hard earned cash based solely on The Eyebrow's "feeling" as to how it will be spent.
Here endeth the lesson.
Lessons In Capitalism
News cycles are fickle things. Last week Big Time Cheney was the target of the MSM - and despite their best efforts, the MSM barely laid a glove on him. Personally, I think David Gregory is going to need therapy.
This week, the MSM has latched on to a story it all but ignored in its infancy last week. Dubai Ports World is in talks to acquire Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. P&O runs major commercial operations at ports in Baltimore, Miami, New Jersey, New Orleans, New York and Philadelphia.
This kind of merger and acquisition happens all the time in today's global economy. Normally such a business deal would barely merit a blurb in the WSJ Marketplace section. This deal, however, is different. Dubai Ports World is a state-owned business in the United Arab Emirates.
The UAE, for those of you geographically challenged readers, is an oil rich nation in the Middle East. It is a strategic ally (politically) of the United States. That said, it has more than its fair share of Islamofacist Murdering Thugs in its population.
Much has been made in the MSM about the "Bush Administration's Plan to Sell Ports Operations" Dubai Ports World. Hillary declared "Our port security is too important to place in the hands of foreign governments." By so doing, she demonstrated her ignorance to a fact she evidently chose to overlook.
Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, for those of you who didn't follow the link or are again geographically challenged, is a British owned company. In case you were wondering, Great Britain is not a state in the United States of America. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a foreign country. P&O has been operating ports in the United States since the early 1900s. Thus the foundation of Hillary's argument crumbles. Its not the first time. Won't be the last.
Should port operations be entrusted to a company owned by a country known to harbor Islamofacist Murdering Thugs? Hell no. Should W nix the port deal? Hell yes. That's not the point here.
The point is, there are a bunch of politically correct, don't offend anybody, never use ethnic origin as a point of judgment spineless liberals who have joined the chorus of politicians demanding the port deal be sunk by W. Make no mistake about it, if this deal is sunk, it will be done because the company's nationality is Arab. It really is that simple.
For a people who claim ethnicity, race, and nationality should never used in making business decisions I find it ironic that political expediency makes them abandon principles so dear to their hearts and minds.
Here endeth the lesson.
Binny Laden - "I'll die first!"
The al Qeada PR Firm commonly known as al Jazzera relased more of the most recent audio tape recorded by Usama "Binny" Laden.
Note my emphasis of the term audio. What's the matter Binny? Looking a little disfigured lately? Missing a limb or two?
I digress. In the most recent audio release, Binny vowed that he would "never be taken alive."
For once, I'm in agreement with Binny. His assumption of room temperature is something that will make my day.

al Qeda's PR Firm covers mock Bush/Blair/Sharon Trial in Cairo
Here's one for those of you who believe negotiations with the Islamofascist Murdering Thugs is possible - that if we would all just get together and sing a few verses of Kum By Ya, the world could live in peace and harmony - complete with an ice cold Coca Cola for everyone.
On February 2-5, al Jazzera - a media outlet that should just come out and state for the record that its nothing more than al-Qeda's PR Firm - covered a mock trail of W, Tony Blair, and Ariel Sharon. I emphasize the word "mock" because if you read the translation, those participating were participating in anything but a "mock" trial.
Coverage of this event comes via MEMRI-TV. For video, follow this link. A transcript is also available.
The vitriol, venom, and rage evident at this proceeding makes the Arab Street out to look like little more than a bunch of angry thugs. Where, pray tell, are the moderates? Where are those prepared to reason and negotiate in good faith?
If Hamas lawyer Stanley Cohen is the best guy they can find to articulate their message, perhaps war really is all they understand.
Kofi Annan to US - Close Gitmo
I think sooner or later there will be a need to close the Guantanamo (camp), and I think it will be up to the government to decide, and hopefully to do it as soon as is possible. - UN Secretary General Kofi AnnanUS to Kofi - Pound Sand.
These are dangerous terrorists that we are talking about who are there. Nothing had changed in terms of our views. - White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan.Pot to Kettle: "You're Black"
Thirty-one Senate Jackasses sent a letter to Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez calling on him to recuse himself in the Abramoff investigation.
Gonzalez, toeing the W Administration line, wisely told the Senate Jackasses to Pound Sand.
White House Releases Actual Press Gaggle Footage
Usually this video is sanitized to avoid embarassment to the MSM, specifically David Gregory. Riehl World View has the un-edited version.
Sometimes those words just shouldn't be used in the same sentance.
Big Time's Mea Culpa
For those of you living under a rock, in a remote part of Antarctica, or some other remote undisclosed location, the Vice President of the United States, Richard "Big Time" Cheney, shot a fellow hunter over the weekend while hunting quail in south Texas.
The hunter is currently in the ICU of a Corpus Christi hospital and is expected to make as full a recovery as is possible for a 78 year old man.
Big Time took to the airwaves yesterday to give his account of the events of last Saturday. Not surprisingly, he went to Brit Hume at FoxNews. Video available from Ian at Expose the Left.
Even less of a surprise is the reaction of people like Jack "Tin Foil Hat" Cafferty at CNN, who likens the Hume interview to "Bonnie interviewing Clyde". Courage, Jack. In addition to being a conservative news network, Fox also has about three times the viewers of CNN and MSNBC combined. Damn those market forces!
People like David Gregory have their thongs in a tightly wound bunch because the White House Press Corps was not immediately notified of the incident. Evidently they believe their cell number should precede that of first responders so they can immediately put their spin on the incident. You'll forgive me if I go so far as to state the MSM (collectively) seems disappointed in the prognosis for the victim - looks like he's going to live and deprive them of trying to pin a murder rap on Big Time.
Accidents happen. Looks to me like Big Time and his staff did what was best for the man who was shot. Could the press notification have been handled differently? Possibly. I'm pretty sure "press notification" is not part of any first aid kit I've ever opened.
Here endeth the lesson.
Headspace and Timing - Or Lack Thereof
Sometimes timing is everything. The difference between scoring political points at the expense of your opponent and putting your foot in your mouth to the knee joint is often a matter of time measured in news cycles.
For John F. "Lurch" Kerry, Junior Senator from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, failed presidential non-contender, and Vietnam Veteran, timing has never been one of his strong suits. I could list his factual, verbal, and intellectual gaffes, but you don't have that kind of time, and I don't have that kind of patience.
Today, however, he was in rare form. He declared that, under W, the economy is faltering. And, of course, Lurch has a plan to fix it. Lurch always has a plan.
Lurch's major gaffe came not from his speech, but from the economic news which was released today. First came the news that the US Dollar hit a six-week high against the Euro. Then came the close of the trading day on Wall Street, where the Dow Jones Industrials closed up 136 points to 11,028. Oil prices fell and retail sales were strong. And of course, there's that pesky 4.7% unemployment rate.
Yep, Lurch, your economic analysis is spot on.
Here endeth the lesson.

MSM Reports the Bad and Ugly - Leaves Out the Good
Read First Lieutenant Robert C.J. Parry's editorial on the full story of the California Army National Guard's 1-184 Infantry's exploits in Iraq. Yes, some of the battalion's efforts were not in keeping with the finest traditions of the United States Army. That said, the MSM has wholly ignored the heroism and victories of the 1st of the 184th's soldiers. I can't say I'm surprised, but I'm grateful to Lt. Parry for bringing the whole story home. The LA Times will print it as commentary, but not as an actual news story. No surprise there either.
Thanks, Lt. Parry. Welcome home.
In that same light, read Lieutenant Colonel John M. Kanaley's report of the lack of Western MSM coverage of the February 10th, 2006 press conference announcing the final verification of December's election results. Most notable was this observation:
An example of the failure to report on the importance of this success was demonstrated at the conclusion of the press conference. Several hours later, the only related news on CNN International were reports of two bombings in Iraq and the all important notice from Cindy Sheehan that she will not run for the Senate and send Diane Feinstein into retirement.Go figure.
Dick Morris on Hillary's Anger
Morris has some good lines in this New York Post piece. Probably the best one is this:
In her speeches and interviews, she has two speeds: bland and shrill.Dick, you're too kind. Perhaps "bland" and "unglued" would be a better choice of verbiage.

On The Road With Algore
Not content with making a Jackass of himself at Sundance, the irrelevant former next President of the United States Algore took a trip to Saudi Arabia to further his journey down the well beaten path to political obscurity.
While addressing the Jiddah Economic Forum, Algore lamented the "terrible abuses" perpetrated against Arabs by the United States since September 11, 2001. He declared the enforcement of US immigration laws to be "wrong" and called the conditions under which violators (specifically Arab) are kept to be "unforgivable".
If I may be so bold as to remind the reader that, of the 21 Islamofascist Murdering Thugs who killed some 3,000 people on American soil that Tuesday in September 2001, 19 of them came from Saudi Arabia. They came to this country on student visas, overstayed their welcome, and used our own hospitality as a weapon of war.
Memo to Algore: The people rounded up for violating immigration laws are not "indiscriminately rounded up". They have violated the law. The conditions under which they are kept are not "unforgivable". Its called prison. That's where people who violate the law are kept.
As for your assertion, made on foreign soil, that the actions of the W administration in the enforcement of this nation's immigration laws "does not represent the desires or wishes or feelings of the majority of the citizens of my country" I submit the fact the results of the past three election cycles as proof to the contrary. You, sir, do not represent the majority opinion of this nation. You represent a faction favoring appeasement, retreat, and capitulation to an ideology that would have this nation eternally apologizing for its very existence.
That, sir, is why you will always be known as a has been wannabe.
Here endeth the lesson.
If the Islamofacist Murdering Thug Caucus got their thongs in a tightly wound bunch over the Mohammed Cartoons, wait until they see the AbbaGav's Bumperstickers.

Michelle Malkin Mis-Identifies Dusty Harry
Memo to Michelle: Your references are top notch, but referring to Senate Minority Leader Dusty Harry (D-Luxor Casino) as Dirty Harry is an insult to Clint Eastwood's character of the same name. The mere mention of Dirty Harry Callahan strikes fear into the heart of San Francisco's criminal element. Dusty Harry strikes fear in the hearts of absolutely nobody.
Good News From Cindy Sheehan!
But first the bad news: She's not running for Diane Fienstien's Senate seat. Damn. That would have made for great blog fodder.
Now the good news: You can be graced by the presence of Cindy at your event. So far, the Ebay bidding is up to just over 1 Large. If you suffer from insomnia and don't want to take drugs, this just might be your ticket to slumber.
LA Mayor Blindsided By History
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa claims he was "blindsided" by W's revelation that al Queda planned an attack on the Los Angeles US Bank Tower in 2002.
Some thoughts for Mayor Villaraigosa: First, in 2002 you weren't the Mayor of LA. Therefore, W's address is a historical observation, not a terror warning. Were LA authorities notified about this threat? I don't know. You might want to ask Jim Hahn.
Second, I lived in LA for some years prior to September 11, 2001 and some years after. In the days and weeks following the events of that Tuesday morning, KFI radio ran a single sentence spot between commercials. All the voice said was:
It could have just as easily happened here.It still could. Your taking to the national stage claiming to have been blindsided by something this obvious does little to instill faith in your leadership.

Greyhawk's Takedown of Janis Karpinski's Iraq Urban Legend
Relieved of command, busted from Brigadier General (that's one star for those of you in Blue States) for her unit's role in Abu Ghraib, now Colonel Janis Karpinski fabricates lies from whole cloth in regards to the challenges faced by female soldiers in Iraq. Nice try, Janis, but facts are very stubborn things. Well done, Greyhawk.
Cheap Shot Comments
In my perusal of LDS themed blogs, I came across this: The comments on Geoff B's post over at the Millennial Blackhole (M0) have given a soapbox to anyone who wishes to take their opposition to the Iraq War and vent their spleen in the direction of the United States Armed Forces.
Memo to Paul Mouritsen: You do a disservice with your comment to those stalwart LDS church members who have, are, and continue to serve honorably in the service of this great nation. To state - with only anecdotal evidence - that the US Military is an "environment where alcohol and drug abuse and sexual promiscuity are almost universally accepted, even encouraged" is demeaning to those men and women who wear the uniform. Personally, I stand in awe of who they are and what they do. If you want to make such assertions in an open forum, you'd better be able to come up with more evidence than second hand stories from a "nurse in a large hospital".
Your broad brush painting of soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines as "unsuitable husbands and fathers" due to "years of intense male bonding and consorting with prostitutes" shows you have little if any first hand contact with the righteous men who have served this country.
You, sir, owe them an apology.
Pay No Attention To The Woman In The Casket
One of the most important lessons any person, organization, or political party can learn as time passes is to learn from past mistakes. After being smacked around in an electoral contest, one would think a political party would look back at the events leading up to their defeat and say "We sure as hell aren't going to do that again!"
I bring to your remembrance the memorial service for the late Senator Paul Wellstone (D-MN) in late 2002. He died in a small plane crash during the last month of his re-election bid. His death was tragic, however the memorial service was hijacked by the left-wing whack jobs. It is a generally accepted premise that the hate-filled political speeches dominating this service cost the Democratic party an untold number of Senate races across the country. Have you forgotten? Ian has the video - as usual.
The current band of Left-Winged Jackasses made a pilgrimage to Atlanta - supposedly to honor and mourn the late Coretta Scott King, widow of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Having learned nothing from the Wellstone debacle, many of those who were given the honor of addressing the crowd took the opportunity not to honor Mrs. King, but to take cheap political shots at W.
Principal among the moonbat chorus were Jimmy "Sir Robin" Carter, who pointed out that:
It was difficult for them [the King family] then personally with the civil liberties of both husband and wife violated as they became the target of secret government wiretaps. His effort was mirrored by Reverend Joseph Lowery who weakly tried to slam the Iraq war by channeling Mrs. King and putting his views in her mouth.
Why, pray tell dear Reverend, was W asked to speak at her funeral? If she was anti-W, I'm sure her relatives would not have allowed him to give his tribute.
Personally, I'm not a fan of funerals. I don't go to them unless its a close friend or family member. What I do know is a funeral or memorial service is no place from whence to vent one's spleen. To do so shows a high level of desperation and a considerable lack of education, upbringing, and moral understanding.
Considering the speakers that took advantage of the forum and turned it into a political rally, I'm not that surprised.
Here endeth the lesson.

SOTR Exclusive: Condensed Footage of Kaine Democratic Response Speech
BREAKING NEWS: Kaine is from Virginia, in case you missed that during his speech.
Good evening. My name is Tim Kaine, I'm the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
On behalf of the people in my Commonwealth, I offer this response to President Bush's speech earlier this evening. We should note that I don't speak on behalf of everyone in Virginia, which overwhelmingly carried Bush in the last election. But who's keeping track?
One thing that really bothers me is our President's use of the term "state". Virginia is not a state. As I said earlier, it's a commonwealth. If our president wants to be a "uniter", he'd better start talking like one.
Enough about him. Let's talk about Virginia!
In Virginia we're all about bringing people together to find common-sense solutions to our common problems. Well, except for the crippling traffic. And there was that time we raised income taxes in the face of huge budget surpluses.
But somehow, we in Virginia earned the ranking of America's "Best Managed State."
Which really torques me off, since Virginia is a commonwealth, NOT a state.
Speaking of commonwealths, I'd like to see Massachusetts get that ranking. Eat your heart out, Mitt!
Kaine, Voiceover: Two years ago in Virginia, Democrats and Republicans worked together to reform our budget.
Kaine, Voiceover: And, in Virginia, Democrats and Republicans alike worked together to make record investments in education, like historic University of Virginia, located in the beautiful, economically thriving city of Charlottesville.
There are Republicans in the Commonwealth of Virginia, a most distinguishing feature. Pictured here is former moderate Republican Governor Doug Wilder.
Kaine, Voiceover: In Virginia, we've worked to provide health insurance coverage for nearly 140,000 children who weren't covered four years ago.
We remember those who died on sacred ground--here in Virginia--in the attack on the Pentagon.
We've reformed veterans services. And we're working to provide state re-enlistment bonuses ... I mean commonwealth bonuses... to honor those Virginians who stay in service to... commonwealth and country. Heh heh, notice I didn't say "state" that second time.
Kaine, Voiceover: I recently joined Democrats in Washington and in other states--even some commonwealths--and threatened the big oil companies with burdensome taxes that will ultimately hurt the consumer. With those revenues, I plan to invest in Virginia's many tourist attractions, like the Natural Bridge.
The president! Talk about the president!!
Thank you, chairman. I was just getting to that. You know, Thomas Jefferson was elected president in 1800. He was from Virginia, too.
Jefferson and many other presidents earned Virginia the title "Mother of Presidents". With any luck we'll continue that trend! (wink, wink)
George Allen: Thanks, I plan to.
Quiet, George! (ahem) Thank you for listening, and God bless the Commonwealth of Virginia.
